A brief history: In 1492 A.D. Christopher Columbus makes the first of four voyages to the New World and lands in the Bahamas. The first permanent European colony in North America was Saint Augustine, Florida and was settled by the Spanish. In 1607, the London Company established the first permanent English Settlement in America called Jamestown in southeast Virginia. In 1650, the colonial population was estimated to be 50,400. In 1664, English seized New Amsterdam (city and colony) from the Dutch and renamed it New York.  The first Continental Congress met in Philadelphia with 56 delegates representing every colony except Georgia in 1774. After the American Revolution, war of independence fought between Great Britain and the 13 colonies of North America, Great Britain formally acknowledged American independence in 1783. On July 4, 1776, Continental Congress adopts the declaration of Independence in Philadelphia; and in 1777, Continental Congress approves the first official flag of United States and adopts the Articles of Confederation, the first U.S. constitution. In 1789, George Washington was elected president of the United States and the U.S. constitution goes into effect. In 1797, John Adams was inaugurated as the second president in Philadelphia. The U.S. capital city was moved from Philadelphia to Washington DC in 1800 and Thomas Jefferson became the third president of the U.S. after a year. In 1803, United States agreed to pay France $15 million for the Louisiana Territory and it nearly doubled in size. James Madison became the fourth president of the U.S. in 1809. In 1823, James Monroe, the fifth U.S. president, in his annual address to Congress, declares that the American continents are henceforth off-limits for further colonization by European powers. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th president of U.S. In 1903, Wright brothers made the first controlled, sustained flight in heavier-than-air aircraft at Kitty Hawk. In 1958, Explorer I, first American satellite was launched and in 1961, John F. Kennedy was inaugurated as the 35th president of United States.

Geography and Climate: The United States is a nation in the Western Hemisphere. It consists of forty-eight contiguous states on the North American Continent; Alaska, an enormous peninsula which forms the northwestern most part of North America, and Hawaii, an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. It also holds several Unites States territories in the Pacific & Caribbean. The country shares land borders with Canada and Mexico and a water border with Russia. The total area of the U.S. is about 9,809,000 square kilometers. The climate varies along with the landscape, from tropical in Hawaii and southern Florida to tundra in Alaska and atop some of the highest mountains. Most of the North and East experience a temperate continental climate, with warm summers and cold winters; and most of South experiences a subtropical humid climate with mild winters and long, hot, humid summers. Some parts of California have a Mediterranean climate.

Population/Languages/Ethnicity/Religion: The population of United States in about 303,622,602. The Unites States in an urbanized nation with 80.6 percent of its population residing in cities and suburbs. More than 50 languages are spoken in the U.S. with English being the official language. The Unites States has a multi-cultural society and there are many religions followed, Christian being the pre-dominant.

Education: The American education system is divided into: primary school-secondary school-undergraduate school-graduate school. The American education system requires that a student must complete 12 years of primary and secondary education prior to attending a university or a college. These 12 years of schooling (or its equivalent) may be completed inside or outside the USA. The USA hosts about more than 600,000 international students and comprises approximately about 4% of the total undergraduate US University and US college population, and 10% for US graduate school. US universities, US colleges, and US schools constantly rank very high in world ranking, and this may be the just one reason to study in the US. The US offers international students the most exciting, rewarding and comprehensive array of study options in the world. International students who choose to study in the US have almost unlimited study choices. Furthermore, international students who successfully complete their US study are highly sought-after by employers worldwide.

Living: Living in the US is relatively expensive compared to other counties. You should be able obtain the yearly accommodation and living costs from the college/university you are going to attend in a particular area.

Employment: The international students can work up to 20 hours per week during semesters and full time during breaks; however, the factor that your work does not hamper with your studies are taken into considerations.
